The dryer tumbles fine but clothes come out cold — where do you start?
If the drum spins and the timer advances normally but there's no heat, the motor and most of the control system are working — that narrows it down to the heating element itself, the thermal fuse that protects it, or a safety cutoff triggered by restricted airflow.
What is the thermal fuse, and why does it blow?
It's a one-time safety fuse that permanently cuts power to the heating element if the dryer overheats — usually because lint has restricted airflow somewhere in the vent path. Once blown, it has to be replaced; it won't reset itself. This is the single most common no-heat repair we see, running $90–$150.
Could it just be a clogged vent instead?
Very possibly, and it's worth checking first since it's free to fix yourself. Disconnect the vent hose from the back of the dryer and check for lint buildup, especially if you can't remember the last time the full vent run (not just the lint trap) was cleaned. A restricted vent both causes poor drying and is exactly what blows thermal fuses and heating elements prematurely.
What if the vent is clear and it's still not heating?
That points to the heating element itself, which can burn out after years of use — a $150–$260 repair on most electric dryers, somewhat less on gas models where it's the igniter or gas valve solenoid instead ($120–$220).
